Starred Review. Reviewed by Megan Whalen Turner
If there really are only seven original plots inside world, it's odd that boy meets girl is definitely mentioned, and society goes bad and attacks the nice guy never is. Yet we've Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, the House of the Scorpion—and now, following a good tradition of Brave New Worlds, The Hunger Games. Collins hasn't tied her future to your specific date, or weighted it down with a lot of finger wagging. Rather less 1984 and rather more Death Race 2000, hers is a gripping story set in the postapocalyptic world the place where a replacement for the United states of america demands a tribute from each of the territories: two children being used as gladiators in the televised fight for the death.Katniss, from the thing that was once Appalachia, offers to look at the host to her sister in the Hunger Games, but after this ultimate sacrifice, she's entirely dedicated to survival at any cost. It is her teammate, Peeta, who recognizes the importance of holding on one's humanity in such inhuman circumstances. It's a credit to Collins's skill at characterization that Katniss, like a brand new Theseus, is cold, calculating whilst still being likable. She has the attributes being a winner, where Peeta has the grace to be a fantastic loser. It's no accident that these games are presented as pop culture. Every generation projects its fear: runaway science, communism, overpopulation, nuclear wars and, now, reality TV. Their State of Panem—which needs to keep its tributaries subdued and its citizens complacent—may have came up with Games, but mindless television could be the real danger, the means in which society pacifies its citizens and punishes those who fail to conform. Will its connection to reality TV, ubiquitous today, date the book? It might, but for now, it can make this the best book with the right time. What happens when we choose entertainment over humanity? In Collins's world, we'll be obsessed with grooming, we'll talk funny, and our sentences will end using the same rise as questions. When Katniss is shipped to stylists being made more telegenic before she competes, she stands naked before them, strangely unembarrassed. They're so unlike people that I'm forget about self-conscious than if a trio of oddly colored birds were pecking around my feet, she thinks. In order to never hate these creatures that are sending her to her death, she imagines them as pets. It isn't really only the contestants who risk the loss of the humanity. It is perhaps all who watch. Katniss struggles to win not only the Games though the inherent contest for audience approval. Because this is the first book in a very series, not it is all totally resolved, and what exactly is left unanswered could be the central question. Has she sacrificed too much? We determine what she's got given as much as survive, and not whether the price was too high. Readers will wait eagerly to master more.
Megan Whalen Turner could be the author with the Newbery Honor book The Thief and it is sequels, The Queen of Attolia and The King of Attolia. The next book in the series will likely be published by Greenwillow in 2010.

Grade 7 Up -In a not-too-distant future, the United states of america of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, being replaced by Panem, a country divided to the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to engage in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation with the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem because the 24 participants are made to eliminate their competitors, literally, wonderful citizens needed to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected since the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son from the town baker who seems to possess all of the fighting skills of an lump of bread dough, is gonna be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who've trained for this their whole lives. Collins's characters are completely realistic and sympathetic because they form alliances and friendships in the face of overwhelming odds; the plot is tense, dramatic, and engrossing. This book will definitely resonate with the generation raised on reality shows like 'Survivor' and 'American Gladiator.' Book among a planned trilogy.Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

Product Description
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out from the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who will they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has managed to get clear that no-one else is protected either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the folks of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one from the most talked about books in the year.
A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said through the start that The Hunger Games story was intended as being a trilogy. Did it really end the way you planned it from the beginning?

A: Very much so. While I didn't know every detail, of course, the arc in the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, on the eventual outcome remained constant through the writing process.

Q: We understand you worked on the initial screenplay for the film to get based on The Hunger Games. What will be the biggest distinction between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?

A: There are several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you are adapting a novel into a two-hour movie you can't take everything with you. The story has to get condensed to fit the newest form. Then there is the question of methods best to consider a book told in the first person and offer tense and transform it into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you never leave Katniss to get a second and are privy to all of her thoughts so you will need a strategy to dramatize her inner world and to generate it feasible for other characters to exist beyond her company. Finally, there is the challenge of the way to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating in order that your core audience can view it. A lot of situations are acceptable on a page that would not be on the screen. But how certain moments are depicted will ultimately be in the director's hands.

Q: Do you imagine you're capable to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed inside world you are currently creating so fully it is simply too difficult to think about new ideas?

A: We've a few seeds of ideas boating inside my head but--given a whole lot of of my focus remains on The Hunger Games--it will likely be awhile before one fully emerges and i also can commence to develop it.

Q: The Hunger Games is an annual televised event by which one boy then one girl from each in the twelve districts is instructed to participate in a fight-to-the-death on live TV. Exactly what do you think the benefit of reality television is--to both kids and adults?

A: Well, they're often set up as games and, like sporting events, there's an interest in seeing who wins. The contestants are often unknown, which makes them relatable. Sometimes they've got very talented people performing. Then there's the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or brought to tears, or suffering physically--which I've found very disturbing. There's also the possibility for desensitizing the audience, so that after they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, this doesn't happen hold the impact it should.

Q: In the event you were expected to compete inside the Hunger Games, what can you imagine your skill would be?

A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I became trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope could be to get hold of the rapier if there was clearly one available. But the facts is I'd probably get in relation to its a four in Training.

Q: What would you hope readers will come away with when they read The Hunger Games trilogy?

A: Questions about how precisely elements of the books might be relevant of their own lives. And, if they are disturbing, what they might do about them.

Q: What were some of your respective favorite novels when you had been a teen?

A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Boris by Jaapter Haar
Germinal by Emile Zola
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in a more Hunger Game, but now it really is for world control. While it is really a clever twist on the original plot, it indicates that there exists less focus about the individual characters and much more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick will continue to breathe life right into a less vibrant Katniss by displaying despair both at those she feels accountable for killing and possibly at her motives and choices. This is surely an older, wiser, sadder, and intensely reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn in the rebels as well as the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to make an endeavor to control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are very well evidenced in the voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement to a unsure go back to sweetness. McCormick also makes the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and several confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts as an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but in addition respects the individuality and different challenges of each and every in the main characters. A successful completion of your monumental series.–Edith Ching, University of Maryland, College Parkα(c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. The excellent 15th edition with this "best of" series, edited by myster maven Otto Penzler, contains 20 winning short stories, many by relative unknowns. Among the standouts are Brendan DuBois’s "Ride-Along," in which a veteran cop and a freelance reporter become involved in a robbery, and Beth Ann Fennelly and Tom Franklin’s "What His Hands Have Been Waiting For," through which the struggle for survival inside the Mississippi Delta during the terrible 1927 flood has a strange turn. In Ed Gorman’s memorable "Flying Solo," two old men dying of cancer make most with their last days. Such as previous volumes, it’s hard to locate lighter fare, but S.J. Rozan’s clever "Chin Yong-Yun Takes a Case" is a beautifully crafted and satisfying tale of amateur detection. Other contributors include such pros as Lawrence Block, Loren D. Estleman, and Mickey Spillane and Max Collins. --STARRED Publishers Weekly
"Ranging from homespun to lush and tropical, this year’s crop of 20 stories provides a number of tastes and textures.
But exotic doesn’t always mean compelling. Charles McCarry’s "The End in the String," emerge Africa, lumbers such as an elephant toward a conclusion as momentous like a mouse. "Diamond Alley," Dennis McFadden’s quiet tale of small-town teens confronting the murder of the popular classmate, packs a much better punch. Family stories are equally powerful. In Christopher Merkner’s chilling "Last Cottage," a little daughter couple tries to outlast a neighbor determined to oust them using their waterfront home. Across cultures, mothers protect. In Richard Lange’s "Baby Killer," Blanca struggles having an acting-out granddaughter. And although embarrassed by her profession, a Chinese mother helps her detective daughter in S.J. Rozan’s "Chin Yong-Yun Takes a Case." An absentee father’s return challenges a wife who’s moved on in Joe R. Lansdale’s "The Stars Are Falling." But Chris F. Holm shows in "The Hitter" that sometimes the greatest threat is on the dads themselves. Families don’t always grow through birth or marriage, as Beth Ann Fennelly and Tom Franklin reveal in "What His Hands Ended Up Waiting For." And of course, some families are simply plain toxic, as Lawrence Block’s "Clean Slate" and Loren D. Estleman’s "Sometimes a Hyena" aptly demonstrate. But nasty behavior isn’t only a family affair. Eric Barnes shows teenagers wreaking havoc for no particular reason in the slow-moving "Something Pretty, Something Beautiful." And in "A While Dead," Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins demonstrate that evil can arrive where it’s least expected.
It has its highs and lows, but the better of Coben’s Best is absolutely first-rate."

"In this anthology series celebrating American short fiction annually since 1915, every year an alternative renowned writer chooses the best 20 stories of the year...Brooks does the honors impressively."
--Booklist
"Though many of the names here are familiar, this powerful new work re-establishes these authors' command from the form."
--Publishers Weekly "Another stellar selection from an anthology that has sustained high standards for 35 years..Each one of these stories could establish itself as some reader’s favorite."
--Kirkus, starred

In her introduction to The Best American Short Stories 2011, Geraldine Brooks draws the comparison from a well-told joke as well as a good short story. She writes, “Each form depends on suggestion and economy. Characters have to be drawn inside a few deft strokes. There’s generally a setup, a reveal, a reversal, and a release . . . In the joke and inside short story, first and end are precisely anchored tent poles, and what lies between must pull so taut it twangs.”

The twenty tightly crafted stories collected here are brimming with deftly drawn characters, universal truths, and often, like good jokes, surprising humor. Richard Powers’s “To the Measures Fall” is really a comic meditation about the uses of literature inside course of your life. In the satirical “The Sleep,” Caitlin Horrocks puts her fictional prairie town to bed—the inhabitants hibernate through the long winter as being a form of escape—while in Steve Millhauser’s imagined town the citizens are visited by ghostlike apparitions in “The Phantoms.” Allegra Goodman’s spare but beautiful “La Vita Nuova” finds a jilted fiancée letting her art class paint across her wedding dress as a poignant act of release. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wryly captures the social change inside the air in Lagos, Nigeria, in their story of a wealthy child who just isn't entirely comfortable using what his life has become.

As Brooks pursued these richly imagined and varied landscapes she learned that “it was like walking in the best type of party, in places you can hole up inside a corner with old friends for any while, then launch out among interesting strangers.”

Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists in which the U.S. employed to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament where two teen "tributes" from each from the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle on the death. in The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing them to let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to discover herself more the center of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her which has a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets along with her alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is divided into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for that 75th Annual Hunger Games, as well as a truncated version with the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the world of Panem: its power structure, rumors of a secret district, as well as a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens as being a character. Though initially bewildered with the interest to her, she comes almost to embrace her status since the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more with the story happens away from arena than within, this sequel has enough action to thrill Hunger Games fans and instead gives off enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to be desperate for the next installment.

Reviewers were pleased to report the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all looked forward to the third book in the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was just like the initial book Hunger Games or needs to be viewed as somewhat of the "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons for the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire had been a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a way that will enthrall young readers without providing them with (too many) nightmares.
